A MESSAGE FROM OUR JUNIOR CLUB CAPTAIN - Vikki
I just wanted to reach out a few weeks into the season to say thank you so much for entrusting us with your young athletes as they start their journey in softball. I was in your position just a few years ago in fact, and my children and I have all grown immensely through this wonderful, welcoming and terribly fun sport. I truly hope that you’re all experiencing the same level of enjoyment that I have always had each Saturday (be great if the summer weather could actually arrive though!). It has been wonderful seeing the swell of support on the sidelines with the plethora of new teams that we have in the club this year.
A massive thank you to the new coaches, managers, scorers and umpires that have undertaken a huge learning curve to get these new teams off the ground and humming along beautifully. You may know that I have also undertaken coaching for the first time this year and golly it’s been a lot of self doubt and second guessing coming through as I’ve tried to find my coaching style…but boy is it rewarding. So I appreciate that each of our new officials will be feeling the same way!
I do want to use this as an opportunity to remind all parents across the grades that your junior athlete plays our game primarily for fun, enjoyment, participation and to interact with others. It is our responsibility as a club and sport to ensure that those needs are met so that the child continues to play softball to a higher level. This end-goal effects the way that our coaches and management teams run their games, they primarily coach for fun and participation, to embed the foundation skills and at this early stage of the season, therefore for the younger grades the aim is not to win at all costs. We gently remind parents to respect the coaches methods and to also understand they they and our officials are human and occasionally calls might not go towards a winning result. To this end we would like a timely reminder to go out to be aware of your chatter on the sideline; our young athletes from both teams are within ear shot and will learn from your example, they are also capable of hearing the comments of adults around the diamonds about their own performances and this puts them at risk of having their confidence undermined. It also makes it hard for our coaches voices to be heard by our players when there’s a bit of well meant sideline coaching coming from more familiar parental voices. It doesn’t happen often that negativity is heard as 99.9% is positive affirmations for excellent plays…but we always like to remind families at this stage of the season to just “be aware”. So thank you!
It has been a complete honour wandering the diamonds and seeing your families and watching your players as they bond with their teams. We are so blessed to have such great kids (and families) in this club!
